New guidelines aim to help companies source palm oil sustainably

New guidelines to help companies source palm oil sustainablyTo help retailers and CPGs achieve zero net deforestation by 2020, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) has published its “first ever” Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Guidelines.

Developed by CGF’s retail and manufacturer members, with input from others including standard-setting organizations, the guidelines lay out the steps companies will need to take to achieve a fully-sustainable palm oil supply.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world with Malaysia and Indonesia being the top producers. According to CGF: “Although potentially one of the most sustainable vegetable oils, there is serious concern that rapid expansion of palm oil plantations has, on occasions, resulted in loss of valuable tropical forests and social conflict.”
