On the wall: subway supermarkets around the world

From Walmart to Woolworths to Tesco, retailers are testing virtual stores

Across Europe, Asia, North America and elsewhere, grocers are setting up so-called subway supermarkets.

These outlets are little more than walls at bus stops, subways and other high-traffic areas on which a handful of products are shown.

Subway supermarkets allow busy commuters to order tissue paper, soap, bottled water,  diapers and other fast-moving consumer goods on the fly with their smartphone. Shoppers simply scan the items on the wall they want, using QR codes or an app, then wait for the products to be delivered to their homes.
