American energy and snack bar maker Clif has announced the launch a new product that reflects the company’s commitment to making quality, sustainable foods–and boosts its offering in the highly competitive Canadian snack bar market.

On May 1, Clif Organic Trail Mix bars will go on sale in retailers across Canada.

Developed over the past year by the Emeryville,Calif.-based company's craft, quality and innovation team, the bars will be available in five flavours that blend natural ingredients like coconut, almond, peanut, cherry, pomegranate, sea salt and dark chocolate.

"Our team strived to create a snack bar that has delicious taste, texture and nutrition," Clif Bar brand director Jennifer Yun wrote told Canadian Grocer.

She added that the 180-calorie, gluten-free bars, which weigh 40 grams and contain 4 grams of fibre and 9 grams of fat, reflect the company's core values.

"By using organic and certified sustainable ingredients we help keep toxic persistent pesticides and toxic synthetic chemicals out of our food system," said Yun.

The company, she added, has purchased nearly 250 million kilograms of organic ingredients over the past decade.

One of some two dozen products now made by Clif, the new bar joins a robust food category in Canada.

According to a recent Euromonitor International report, sales in the Canadian snack bar industry grew by 3% to $1.1 billion in 2014.

"The driver of growth in this category will be the continuing demand among Canadian consumers for healthy and convenient snacks," reads the report.

The report projects sales will grow by 2 percent a year and reach $1.2 billion in 2019.
