Thomas Barlow, president and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG), has announced he will retire Nov. 30.

Thomas Shurrie, who joined CFIG in June 2017 as senior vice-president and chief operating officer, will succeed him.

In a press release issued Thursday afternoon, CFIG chair of the board Jim Bexis credited Barlow--who has been with the organization a little more than five years--with making "major inroads with membership, suppliers and staff."

"Tom’s hard work and dedication to independent grocers, and the grocery channel in Canada, has positioned CFIG for future success," said Bexis.

Shurrie will officially take over the president and CEO role on Dec. 3.

Prior to joining CFIG last year, Shurrie was executive vice-president customer development and general manager at Acosta Canada. During his career, he has also held senior level positions at ConAgra Foods, Parmalat Canada and Longo’s. Shurrie has been a member of CFIG’s associate members council.
