Former Dairy Farmers of Canada president lands a new gig

Bothwell Cheese has appointed former Dairy Farmers of Canada president Wally Smith to the position of executive vice-president.

"Wally's experience compliments our growth plans, and we believe he will play an integral role in the future success of Bothwell Cheese," said Kevin Thomson, president of the independently-owned cheese manufacturer, in a press release announcing Smith's hire. "He shares our beliefs in supporting the Canadian Dairy Industry and family farms and fits well with our culture and family values."

Smith became a dairy farmer in 1985 and started work with the DFC board of directors in 2000. He was elected to the executive committee three years later. And, in 2005, Smith was elected to the International Federation of Agricultural Producers Group on Dairy Products where he served as vice-chair from 2008- 2010.

Smith most recently served as president of the Dairy Farmers of Canada for the maximum three-year term. He was succeeded by Pierre Lampron, a seventh generation organic dairy farmer.
