Giant Tiger launched its 11th location in Winnipeg, Man. over the weekend, marking the occasion with with an official grand opening celebration.

The 18,000-sq.-ft. store features the chain’s usual fare of groceries, clothing and everyday household items at discount prices.

The new store is part of Giant Tiger’s aggressive expansion strategy across the country. With more than 240 locations currently open across Canada, the Ottawa-based chain has plans to open 10 to 15 new stores every year for the next three to five years.

The Winnipeg store celebrated its grand opening Aug. 4 with activities for guests of all ages, from free face-painting to gift card giveaways and a visit from the chain’s mascot: Friendly, the Giant Tiger.

Giant Tiger Stores Limited and store manager Kris Rock made a charitable donation to support Winnipeg Harvest, and there was a charity barbecue, with all proceeds going to Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg.

Correction: The original version of this story had Giant Tiger's store count in Winnipeg at five. The newest location is, in fact, its 11th in the Winnipeg area. Canadian Grocer regrets the error.
