Giant Tiger recently hosted an event at its distribution centre in the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal in Eastern Ontario, to give community members a glimpse of the 600,000-sq.-ft. space located in Johnstown Industrial Park.

Event goers were given the opportunity to tour parts of the facility, which will phase in operations starting in January, with plans to be fully operational by next summer. In addition to cutting-edge machinery, the distribution centre is equipped with a games room and a gym, and an outdoor patio is surrounded by a newly-planted apple orchard.

"Our warehouse staff are very excited about the new facility," said Mike Quinn, vice-president, warehousing and distribution at Giant Tiger, in a media release. "It has been designed to be a state-of-the art distribution centre that is very much centered around our people."

The chain of discount stores is in expansion mode, with plans to open 10 to 15 new stores every year for the next three to five years. According to its website, seven stores are scheduled to open by the end of November.

The first Giant Tiger opened in Ottawa’s Byward Market in 1961 and today the company has more than 230 locations across Canada. All stores are locally owned or operated.
