Albertans can no longer collect reward points at pharmacy

Beginning immediately, Albertans can no longer collect reward points for drug purchases or pharmacy services.

The Alberta College of Pharmacists wanted the ban as early as 2014, but grocery giant Sobeys challenged the plan.

The college lost its fight in a 2016 ruling but the Alberta Court of Appeal has overturned that and says the college does have the right to impose the ban on loyalty programs.

The college has argued that pharmacists are a key part of the health-care system and that it had the authority to ensure high ethical standards.

Sobeys says it's disappointed with the ruling.

The chain says it believes that offering rewards to help increase consumer loyalty ultimately improves health outcomes.
