Starting this summer, British Colombia will add provincial sales tax to soft drinks that contain sugar.

Currently, carbonated beverages that contain sugar, natural sweeteners or artificial sweeteners are tax exempt because they are considered a "food product for human consumption."

The new 7% tax will also apply to beverages dispensed through soda fountains, soda guns and those dispensed through vending machines.

Finance Minister Carole James made the announcement during her budget presentation in Victoria on Wednesday. She said the decision was based on repeated recommendations from various health experts.

The tax goes into effect on July 1 and is forecast to generate $27 million in revenues in 2020-2021.
