Loblaw removes frozen raw chicken products from its shelves

Moving forward, the Canadian grocer will only sell cooked frozen chicken products

Loblaw Companies Limited says it will no longer sell frozen raw
chicken products under its No Name brand, and out of precaution is voluntarily recalling frozen, breaded chicken products sold before or on Feb. 8.

In a press release issued Monday morning, Canada's largest grocer said it understood the "potential risk of illness associated with frozen raw chicken products." Moving forward it will only sell 100% fully cooked frozen chicken nuggets, strips and burgers.

Consumers will receive a full refund when returning No Name brand frozen raw chicken products to Loblaw-owned banners across the country.

Loblaw's decision follows a heightened number of reported salmonella infections associated with frozen raw breaded chicken products, due at least in part to improper cooking or handling.

Last September Canada's top public health doctors warned consumers about the risk of salmonella from frozen raw breaded chicken products, saying they pose a health risk to anyone who handles, prepares or consumes them.
