Loblaw only grocer on list of Best Employers for New Canadians

3/14/2012

Loblaw has been named one of the Best Employers for New Canadians by Mediacorp Canada.

It was the only grocer and its second year on the list.

The award recognizes Loblaw's efforts in creating a workplace for newcomers to Canada that is inclusive and respectful of ethnic diversity.

One of the company's five corporate social responsibility principles is a commitment to Reflect our Nation's Diversity.

"Loblaw is honoured to be recognized as one of the Best Employers for New Canadians. We are proud of the impact that our recruitment and orientation approach and processes have had in enabling and  supporting a workplace culture that contributes to successful integration of our new colleagues," said Judy McCrie, executive vice president, human resources and labour relations, Loblaw in a press release.

Some of the initiatives that helped Loblaw earn its place on the list included an inclusion Toolkit that provides resources for the assessment of international qualifications and financial assistance for those looking to upgrade their international credentials; a Loblaw buddy program that pairs all new hires with a colleague to assist with workplace transition; and various diversity initiatives such as quiet rooms to ensure a multicultural, multifaith workplace; working with external organizations that are experts in diversity to ensure it reflects the community it serves.

The Best Employers for New Canadians award is in its fifth year and is a national award that recognizes Canada's best employers for recent immigrants.
