Metro’s Green Apple School Program has announced some of the recipients for 2011 that encourages elementary and secondary school students to employ “green” thinking and healthy living in their schools and communities.

See the full list of recipients here.

The program began in 2009, and awards $1,000 grants to Ontario elementary and high schools to help them develop and execute green community projects.

Since the program’s inception, Metro has awarded over 1,500 grants to schools that demonstrated how their “green” ideas would positively impact their school or community.

Schools submitted projects that focused on environmental protection such as conservation and composting systems.

“Our Green Apple School Program has received tremendously positive feedback and response from students and teachers so we are thrilled to provide this initiative once again,” said Johanne Choinière, senior vice president, Metro Ontario Inc., “Metro believes that every act of green counts. Not only do we want to encourage students to improve the well-being of their schools and communities, but we also want to help them bring these ideas to life.”

All elementary or secondary schools in Ontario are eligible for Metro’s Green Apple School Program.

Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2011 with grants being awarded throughout the year for ideas that creatively meet the program criteria.
