The Grocery Foundation kicked off its annual Toonies for Tummies fundraising campaign with a breakfast event at a Toronto area high school on Nov. 21.

Food, beverage, and retail sponsors were on hand to prepare and serve breakfast to approximately 400 students of Michael Power St. Joseph High School in Etobicoke.

During the breakfast event, Shaun McKenna, executive director of The Grocery Foundation, announced retail partners and sponsor brands would be matching online donations, up to $10,000, made before #GivingTuesday (Dec. 3).

Toonies for Tummies raises money for children’s breakfast programs by asking shoppers to donate $2 at the checkout. According to The Grocery Foundation, it’s estimated that one in five children in Canada attends school hungry, and in some communities, the incidence is higher.

The 2019 Toonies for Tummies campaign raised a record-breaking $1.5 million, 25% over the goal and 42% over the previous year’s donations.

The next Toonies for Tummies campaign will run from Jan. 29 to Mar. 7.
