Canadians are concerned about food access, according to a survey published on World Food Day (Oct. 16) and ahead of the federal election (Oct. 21), and 85% feel the country should prioritize access to healthy food for all citizens.

Conducted by: Leger on behalf of Danone Canada

Methodology: An online survey conducted from Sept. 27 to Sept. 30 of 1,584 English and French-speaking Canadians 18 years of age or older.

Key findings:

  • 61% of Canadians believe they are not always able to eat as healthy as they would like.

  • 77% of Canadians admit to skipping one or more meals a day in the last six months, citing lack of time as the primary reason (61%).

  • Though 59% of Canadians say they sometimes don't buy food because it's too expensive, and 63% believe their grocery bill takes up too much of their budget, 67% agree there are people within their circle who can afford to eat well but don't.

“Although Canada enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world, and we have made significant strides regarding health and nutrition, there is a pressing need to reconnect Canadians with the food they eat,” said Natacha Gouveia, director of communications at Danone Canada, in a press release. “With its mandate to promote action against hunger, World Food Day is a reminder that we all have a continued role to play in building a healthier world through food.”
