Mini-Target to open in Dinkytown

Smaller store could attract urban shoppers and university students
7/8/2014

Target is testing the theory that good things come in small packages. The discount retailer is set to open its first small-scale concept, TargetExpress, in Dinkytown, Minneapolis on July 23. The store will open in the base of a 316-unit apartment building near the University of Minnesota. The building won the Business Journal's Best Real Estate 2014 award in the student housing category. "We'll carefully evaluate this new format to determine plans for future growth, so stay tuned," said John Griffith, executive vice-president, property development, in January when the project was first announced. TargetExpress will be about 20,0000-sq.ft – about one-sixth of the size of an average Target location. Merchandising will include a mix of basic clothing, food and pharmacy items, and some home decor and electronics.
