Retailers testing larger c-store format

Grocers like Kroger, Walmart are looking into formats that are larger than c-stores, but smaller than conventional formats
12/5/2013

Cincinnati grocer Kroger is trialling a format in the Columbus market that is a larger c-store.

The recently opened Turkey Hill Market is7,500 sq. ft. This is smaller than the Kroger grocery stores(typically 67,000 sq. ft.) but larger than the c-store outlets Kroger operates (4,000 sq. ft.)

Walmart has also been building more smaller grocery stores with its Neighbourhood Markets and Walmart Express c-stores as they're growing faster than its large Supercenters.

The key, say experts is paying grocery-store prices at a smaller store.

At Kroger's Turkey Hill Market, shoppers can find fresh groceries, frozen, prepared and packaged foods next to typical convenience-store foods such as slushies, grilled hot dogs, and pizza by the slice.
