Using podcasts to help shoppers purchase healthy foods

Study found shoppers bought foods with omega-3s after listening to podcast

If you want your customers to eat healthy, giving them headphones at the door might be the answer.

A new study, conducted by researchers at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., suggests shoppers may be more inclined to make healthy purchases after listening to nutrition podcasts.

From January to May 2011, researchers at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., recruited shoppers to listen to a five-minute podcast on an MP3 player that emphasized the importance of omega-3s.

Aftern listening, the shoppers purchased about two foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, and 79% said they planned to buy more on future trips.

The study was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behaviour.
