Woman creates sponsor program for Canada's north

Individuals can send care packages once, or participate in ongoing program

The high cost of food in Canada's north has inspired one woman to try to lend a helping hand.

Jennifer Gwilliam of Vancouver began a Facebook group where members are matched with a family up north. They can send a care package once, or opt to become an ongoing sponsor.

The federal government does have a food program in place, called the Nutrition North program. After conducting an audit, the program made a number of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to make the program more efficient.

Gwilliam's group has several chapters across Canada. Among the most-needed items are flour, cereal, toilet paper, shampoo, baby food, cheese, rice and winter clothes.
