Whole Foods rates producers' growing practices

3/5/2015

With the introduction of its new Responsibly Grown rating system, Whole Foods Market is making it easier for consumers to make informed choices when shopping its produce and floral departments.

Three years in the making, Responsibly Grown focuses on transparency and takes aim at hazardous pesticides. Under the tiered rating system, fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers will be labelled "Good," "Better" or "Best." To earn a "Good" rating, the farm (from which the product originates) must take major steps to protect human health and the environment. A "Better" rating indicates the farm has shown advanced performance; for instance, has taken measures to ensure soil health and water/energy conservation. A "Best" rating is earned by those farms that go even further and demonstrate exceptional, industry-leading performance in areas such as pest management and protection of bees.
