At the second annual Canadian Fairtrade Awards in Toronto on Oct. 3, Federated Co-op was among three grocers recognized for their ongoing commitment to fair trade.

Federated Co-op won in the grocery/supermarket (large national or regional chain) category, while Choices Markets won in the medium independent category, and Fresh Carrot for small independent.

“Canadians are increasingly concerned about the story behind the products they buy and want companies to demonstrate they are operating ethically," said Tom Smith, executive director of Fairtrade Canada.

He added these awards help recognize companies that have demonstrated leadership and commitment to fair trade principles.

Judges assessed nominees on a variety of criteria, including range of products offered; promotion, education and engagement; and vision, mission, and values.

A special award went to Arayuma for their Premium Organic Coconut Milk. It was voted Canada’s favourite fairtrade product 2013 by nearly 5,000 Canadians during Fair Trade Fortnight, an annual two-week promotional blitz of fair trade products that took place in May.
