Money will be used to provide safe facilities for commercial fishing industry

Ottawa is giving 7.2 million dollars to the repair and maintenance of small craft harbours in eastern P-E-I.

Federal officials said yesterday that the money will be used to provide safe and accessible facilities for the Island's commercial fishing industry.

Three of the harbours receiving funding will see investment extend into future years for an additional 4.8 million dollars.

Money will go toward ongoing work in Annandale, where an L-shaped wharf is being constructed at the east side of the harbour along with armour stone protection on the outside, dredging and construction of a containment cell.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay, who is the M-P for Cardigan, says the work should maintain the infrastructure and create jobs.

The federal government is investing 289 million dollars this year in Canadian small craft harbours.
