The cola maker is launching canned cola with coffee in the U.S. next year. Called Pepsi Café, the company says the beverage “blends the taste of deep flavourful coffee with the refreshing, crisp taste of a Pepsi cola.”
Pepsi Café has nearly double the amount of caffeine than a regular Pepsi and will be sold nationally in 12-oz. slim cans.
“We know that the consumers today are looking for products that meet the needs of energy, indulgence, and refreshment during that afternoon pick-me-up occasion,” said Todd Kaplan, VP of marketing at Pepsi. “We are confident that cola fans, iced coffee drinkers and anyone in need of an extra caffeine boost will love the unexpected flavor medley of roasted coffee infused into the refreshing, crisp flavor of Pepsi.”
Pepsi says it was one of the first to enter the coffee-cola category with the launch of Pepsi Kona–a brew it tested in Philadelphia in the mid ’90s–but slow sales forced the company to pull the product after only a year.
Coke ventured into the category in 2017 with its Coke Plus Coffee, which is available in Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.
Beverage companies are working to adapt product lines to reflect changing consumer habits and tastes, and as concerns over sugar consumption continue to rise.
