Sysco is recalling red onions imported from the U.S. over concerns they are contaminated with salmonella, as more than 100 cases of the illness have been confirmed in Canada.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with federal and provincial health partners as well as the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate salmonella infections in five provinces. Exposure to the red onions has been identified as a likely cause.

The recall covers Imperial Fresh brand jumbo red onions sold at Sysco locations in Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Regina.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is ensuring the onions are pulled from store shelves.
