Three weeks after announcing a $3.5-billion investment to improve service both online and at its stores, Walmart Canada broke ground on a “next generation” distribution centre in Vaughan, Ont.
Upon completion in 2024, the 550,000-sq.-ft. facility will handle more than 70 million cases of general merchandise and food each year–the highest volume of any Walmart facility in the country–according to a press release.
“Our new distribution centre is going to be a world-class facility, which will help us grow and make our business better and simpler for our customers,” said Horacio Barbeito, president and CEO, Walmart Canada.
“These are challenging times for everyone, but we are investing for growth because we believe in Ontario and Canada’s future and are proud to do business in this great country,” he added.
The Vaughan facility is in addition to a new 300,000-sq.-ft. distribution centre that is currently under construction in Surrey, B.C. Walmart is also renovating an existing distribution centre in Cornwall, Ont.
