Grocer execs admit to ignoring expiry dates

When it comes to what the men in charge of Britain's supermarkets put in their basket, they eschew expiry dates.

The CEO admissions were reported byThe Times magazine that surveyed executives at Waitrose, Lidl, and Morrisons among others to gauge their stance on use-by dates.

Execs from Sainsbury's, Morrisons and the Co-op all said they ignored expiry dates and best-before dates at home, while executives at Tesco, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer said they ignored use-by dates.

Dalton Philips, CEO of Morrisons admitted to using a 'smell test' rather than expiry dates.

The survey results come at a time when food waste is a major concern for the European grocery industry. Last year Tesco tossed almost 30,000 tonnes of food waste during the first six months of the year.

Food waste lobbyists said that there needs to be reform around expiry dates as consumers are confused by them, and food is unnecessarily thrown away.
