Gluten-free bars promise long-lasting energy

The go-to snacks for Canada’s professional athletes feature slow-release carbs
7/10/2014

SoLo Gi Energy Bars will be introducing three new flavours this fall.

The energy bars made their debut in 2005, claiming to be the first in Canada to be certified with low glycemic index (GI) levels that prevent the typical “spike, crash and crave” cycle of other competitors.

Whereas some energy bars and snacks contain refined carbs that can make blood sugars spike, the Kelowna, BC-based makers say SoLo Gi bars are formulated with a unique blend of slow-release carbs for sustaining energy.

Touted as the perfect nutritional snack between meals at 200 calories each, SoLo Gi is particularly beneficial for athletes. Kelsey Serwa, ski cross silver medalist at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, says she'll snack on the bar between training sessions. The bars, which retail for $2.49 to $2.69, come in five flavours with another three being added this September: Dark Chocolate Almond, Mocha Fudge and Apple Cinnamon with Quinoa.
