Empire announces 10 B.C. FreshCo conversion locations
Announcement is part of the company's plan to expand FreshCo discount banner into Western Canada through conversions of Safeway and Sobeys stores
Empire has announced 10 store locations in B.C. that will be converted to the company’s discount FreshCo banner.
In 2018, the Sobeys parent company had announced it would expand its FreshCo discount business into Western Canada through the conversion of approximately 25% of its 255 Safeway and Sobeys full-service stores. This week, 10 conversion locations in B.C. were announced (two locations had previously been announced for Manitoba).
The first five Western Canadian FreshCo stores are expected to open in the spring of 2019 (three in B.C. and two in Manitoba), with an additional seven expected to open in B.C. in 2020.
The 12 FreshCo store locations confirmed so far are:
- British Columbia locations: Abbotsford, Aldergrove, downtown Chilliwack, Ladner, Maple Ridge, Mission, Broadmoor and Blundell in Richmond, and Strawberry Hills and Newton in Surrey
- Manitoba locations: Kildonan and Jefferson in Winnipeg
