Forbes reveals top 2000 biggest companies

Three Canadian grocery retailers and one food manufacturer make the final list

More than 30 grocery retailers in the world have earned a spot on Forbes’ 11th Global 2000 – a list of the 2000 biggest public companies in the world.

In its annual listing, Forbes studies thousands of businesses from around the world, making decisions based on sales, profits, assets and market value. The calculations were made as of April 1, 2014.

This year, Chinese bank ICBC took first place, while the U.S. leads as the country with the most ranked companies – there were 564 on the list.

In terms of the grocery industry, Walmart Stores was the highest ranked retailer on the list. Placed at 20, Walmart was calculated to have a market value of just over $247 billion.

Australia’s Wesfarmers, France’s Carrefour, Japan’s Seven & I Holdings and Australia’s Woolworths all earned respectable spots as well. The four retailers were ranked within the top 200 of the list.

Three Canadian grocery retailers made the list: George Weston (number 599, $9.5 billion), Empire (number 1,274, $5.6 billion), Metro Inc. (number 1,306, $5.2 billion).

Dairy processor and cheesemaker Saputo was the only Canadian food manufacturer to be ranked. The company earned a spot at number 1,164.
