Sobeys Inc. is rolling out a free, e-prescribing service across its retail pharmacy network, following a soft launch in Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick.

Run in partnership with Canada Health Infoway, the PrescribeIT service allows physicians to send prescriptions and renewal requests electronically to a patient's preferred pharmacy. According to Sobeys, the service results in "more efficient patient care, enhanced safety and greater accuracy when filling prescriptions."

The service will be available at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, Lawtons, Foodland and IGA retail pharmacies by 2020.

"The adoption of the PrescribeIT platform in pharmacy retail locations across Canada will provide significant benefit to patients, physicians and pharmacy teams," said Jedd Wood, vice-president and general manager, Sobeys National Pharmacy, in a press release announcing the partnership. "By making our prescription processes more efficient, pharmacy teams will be able to dedicate more time to patient care and creating better pharmacy experiences."
