Customers at Loblaw stores in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada are saving money on gas as part of a coupon program with Esso. The coupons can provide gas savings of as much as 10 cents per litre in Ontario and 12 cents per litre in Quebec on gas purchases of up to 75 litres. “We know that Canadians are always looking for ways to save money and we are always looking for innovative ways to support this goal,” says Brian Magdee, vice-president, fuel, Loblaw Companies Ltd. Customers have to spend at least $50 before taxes to get a coupon. Alcohol, tobacco, prescriptions, dry cleaning, gas bar, lottery, postal services, gift cards, products with codeine and products from third-party businesses within Loblaw stores are not included in the deal. In Ontario, the coupons, which are available at Loblaws, Zehrs or Your Independent Grocer, give gas discounts of 2 cents per litre for purchases of $50 to $99.99. The discounts increase by increments of 2 cents per litre for every additional spend of $50, reaching 10 cents per litre for purchases of $250 or more. The coupons can be redeemed until April 24 at more than 600 Esso stations in Ontario as well as at Gas Bar, At the Pumps and Refuel locations in the province. In Quebec, the coupons can be obtained at Provigo and Loblaws locations and are valid at Esso and A plein gaz locations. In Atlantic Canada, the coupons are being distributed at Atlantic Superstore and Dominion stores. Magdee would not answer whether the program helps encourage higher sales or beings in customers who would normally shop elsewhere, saying such information is “competitively sensitive.” The program is being advertised in circulars and with in-store signage until it ends April 10.
