Ontario workers asking for better wages, schedules and benefits
5/26/2015

Loblaw and the union representing 28,000 of its workers in Ontario resumed bargaining on Tuesday–two weeks after the union’s members voted 97 in favour of going on strike.

Strike votes at locals 1000A, 175 and 633 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union took place after talks broke off May 5.

The locals represent workers at Loblaws Great Food, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs, Zehrs Great Food and Fortinos stores.

UFCW says its seeking improvements to wages, work schedules and benefits. It’s also looking to limit third-party providers.

The union says its workers should share in Loblaw’s improved financial performance after several years of the company restructuring.

Shawn Haggerty, president of UFCW Local 175, said that the “resounding” strike vote sends a “clear and strong” message to Loblaw that workers “are willing to do what is needed to get a fair contract."
