Shopping app rates tissues' environmental bonafides

Canadians can gauge how green tissues are based on new Greenpeace app
4/25/2013

Greenpeace Canada on Monday launched a mobile app that it says will help consumers select environmentally friendly tissue products.

The Green Tissue Guide rates over 150 brand-name and private-label products across four categories: facial tissue, toilet paper, paper towels and napkins.

Over 50 products are rated “green,” meaning they are made from 100 per cent recycled paper. These are among “the best option(s) for the environment,” noted a release.

Scotties Envirocare facial tissue, Compliments Greencare toilet paper, White Swan Jumbo paper towels and No Name Printed Napkins all earned top marks.

Several Kleenex products were rated “amber,” which indicated they are less than 100 per cent recycled, but are Forest Stewardship Council certified.

Coming in last place are products by popular brands like Puffs, Bounty and Royale. The app assigned them a “red” colour, and advised customers to “avoid these products.”

Users can browse by product name, category, brand or rating. And each item comes with a picture for easy in-store identification.
