Metro opened two new stores in Ontario this morning (May 8).
The grocer’s newest Metro location welcomed customers in Barrie, while Food Basics opened its sixth store in London.
Located at 640 Mapleview Drive East, the “modern” Metro store spans 43,000 square feet and employs a team of 120 people.
Shoppers will find a variety of Canadian and local products, including Foodland Ontario produce, Irresistible and Selection products, meals to go, a full floral section, fresh bakery, full service meat and seafood, pharmacy, Nature’s Signature and free electric vehicle charging stations.
Officially named Metro South Barrie, the store celebrates the local community with decor of nearby landmarks. Jeremy Franklin will serve as store manager.
As part of the opening, Metro is donating $5,000 to the Barrie Food Bank.
“This new store truly reflects the vibrant community it serves, offering customers exactly what they want. Metro will be your go-to destination for fresh and local products, featuring the best Simcoe County has to offer. Integrating seamlessly within the community is important to us, so we’ve tailored our product offerings and store décor to match the neighbourhood,” said Joe Fusco, SVP, Metro, in a press release.
Over in London, Food Basics opened the doors to its sixth location in the city and 147th overall.
The store is the second of seven slated to open in Ontario in 2025—the same year as the discount chain’s 30th anniversary.
Located at 1530 Rob Panzer Road, the 32,000 square-foot store will employ a team of 100 people.
“We are excited to be able to bring Food Basics to more members of the London community, offering more ways for residents to save on quality products,” said John Manax, vice president of operations, Food Basics, in a press release. “As our sixth location in London, many will be familiar with us, and for those who are first-time shoppers will get to know Food Basics as a discount grocer that is a reliable source for always fresh, always in-stock, healthy food at always great prices.”
Described as “modern” and “contemporary,” the store aims to cater to the diversity of the community.
Customers will find Irresistible and Selection products, an international foods section, locally sourced products, fresh meat and produce and fresh BBQ chickens.
